GDD20 :

HIgher Certificate in
game development & Design

About the course

The Game Development and Design program is a one-year intensive higher certificate course, accredited by the CHE and SAQA. Because it’s only one year, we work really hard and really fast. You get to jump into the actual workforce after only 1 year and you’ll be accustomed to working at the industry pace.

Students graduate with confidence after receiving exceptional knowledge and skills with our combined design and programming approach. Create engaging and interactive experiences from inception, creation and optimization to deployment. You don’t need any previous design and programming experience as we will take you through all the different aspects step by step.

The classes are divided into small groups so the lecturers get to know all the students personally and can give individual attention to student projects.

The design module enables the students to work with Photoshop and Illustrator to create digital art. Learn to work with 2D Animation, Concept Art, UI and UX design, as well as portfolio and personal branding. Design 2D games, seamless game experiences, plan and pitch games.

The course allows students to build a solid foundation in game programming concepts like programming rules, syntax, and interaction between the back and front-end elements in the game environment.

During the course, students branch into textual programming which helps them have more control and efficiency in the creation of logic and functional games. Key concepts like proper story structure and aesthetics allow students to create immersive, fun and engaging game experiences.

Later in the course, students acquire the skills of gameplay mechanics, game balancing, game space and game puzzles which adds interactivity to the game world. Player psychology, motivation and how to target a specific market help our students games stand out.

Students learn about core skills, workflow and the concepts involved to create and implement game audio using Pro Tools in conjunction with the Unity Game Engine.

We also focus on industry preparedness and soft skills like entrepreneurship, public speaking and networking.

We attend Rage, Comic Con, Make Games Africa, Ludum Dare Game Jams and also host various gaming events during the year.
