OVERVIEW

Be one of the first to join one of the fastest growing industries in the world! Become an independent game developer with all the necessary skills to create games from concept to completion.

Our comprehensive 1-year Game Design & Development course will give you the skill-set to create fantastic game worlds, interactions and characters. The course also teaches the programming skills and game theory needed to create amazing player experiences across a variety of game genres.

This Game Course is uniquely developed from a game production perspective and includes aspects that can be applied in other fields of the Multimedia industry other than producing games alone. These aspects includes 3D Modelling and Animation, Visual Painting and Sculpting, Visual programming and Scripting and Applied Digital Arts.

Whether your strength lies in programming, audio or visual creation - this gaming course provides a great platform to start your career in the Visual and Creative Arts.

REQUIREMENTS

No prior gaming or music knowledge are required to study this course.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Computer literacy
Communication Skills (English) equivalent to NQF Level 4.
3Dimentional and visual reasoning and Aptitutde.
Math skills equivalent to NQF4-level
Analytical mindset and problem-solving skills.
 

RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS:

A Passion for gaming

ABOUT CLASSES

Classes are scheduled during the week from Mondays to Fridays (between 9:00 and 17:00.)

Additional studio- and practical time can be scheduled for production work. Since your lectures are hands-on practical based where theoretical concepts are demonstrated and practiced, it is compulsory to attend all lectures.

Students may book the college facilities and studios during the week other than scheduled class.

PRESCRIBED MATERIAL

TEXTBOOKS

The prescribed course textbooks are not included in the course fee. All other course notes and material are included.

SOFTWARE

The course is presented but (not limited) on the latest version of UNITY 3D, Photoshop CC, 3D Studio Max and Mudbox.

In order to work remotely as well, it is recommended that students obtain their own licenses of the primary software platforms.

HARDWARE

Everything you need to successfully complete the course is provided for on Campus during your sessions.

All enrolled students can book and use the Institution's fully equipped classroom room to complete their practical projects during the course.

Registered students qualify for up to 50% student discount on software and hardware.

The game platform development module is designed to equip the learner with the skillset to fully engage with any chosen game development platform.
 
We ensure the student intimate working knowledge of the game development environment and focus on both the front end graphical components and the back end logic driven components.
 
The purpose of this module is to ensure that the learner can create an engaging interactive experience from inception, creation, optimization and then deployment.

3D Modelling and Animation

Subject Name: DMA101
 
The 3D Modelling and Animation module is designed to impart the necessary practical and theoretical knowledge as well as the creative skills needed to model an object within a given 3d modelling software package.
This module creates a solid theoretical understanding and practical application on the process of applying good modelling principles and techniques when working with geometry.

The module also ensures that the learner possesses the skill-set to apply correct topology structure to a modelled object and is knowledgeable in the use of several modelling techniques to create any referenced object.
Our learners will also gain an introductory knowledge of animating with the modelling software package.

The purpose of this module is to give the learner an understanding of the workflow needed to create a 3d art assets as well as the skillset to create, animate and texture the asset itself.

Visual Programming and Scripting

Subject Name: VPS101
 
The module module serve to build a solid foundation in programming concepts and to nurture an understanding of programming rules, syntax and interaction between the back end and front end elements in the game environment. Once this foundation has been established we then branch into programming textually which allow for a greater degree of game logic customisation.
 
This module also outlines the preferred core game framework by introducing the concept of game managers and the interactions between these different components to create a stable and solid interactive experience.

Applied Digital Arts

Subject Name: ADA101
 
The Applied Digital Arts module is designed to equip learners with the skill-set to create and manipulate graphical elements within a digital work space. The learner will become fully proficient in the chosen graphical manipulation and creation software. 
 
The initial skillset focuses on the manipulation of images to familiarize the learner with the digital environment and general workflow.
 
These skills are consequently expanded by imparting a strong foundation in digital drawing and painting with a focus on the fundamentals of art creation -  both in theory and the practical application thereof.

Contemporary Game Design

 
Subject Name: GDT101
 
This module is designed to impart a strong foundation in game design theory. This knowledge will allow the learner to create immersive, fun and engaging game experiences. The module covers key concepts like proper story structure, aesthetics needed to create an engaging world and the underlying technology available to us to do this.
 
We focus on game play mechanics, game balancing, game space and game puzzles which serves to add interactivity to the game world.  We discuss player psychology, motivation and targeting a specific market.
 
This module also provides our learner with a detailed breakdown of the game creation pipeline from concept to creation to iterative gameplay and playtesting and finally deploying to your target market.

Game Audio

Subject Name: PTS130

This module provides students with exposure to the core skills, workflow, and concepts involved in creating and implementing game audio using Pro Tools systems in conjunction with UNITY Game Engine.

It covers basic sound design techniques along with example workflows.

Session time is divided between demonstration and hands-on practice, with ample time to experiment with audio samples.
